What a Blind Website Tester Really Does

We are training blind people to test websites. You do not need to have done it before. No experience at all. If you use a screen reader in your everyday life, you already know the part that nobody can teach you.

The work is real client testing. These are not practice exercises. You take a task a customer really needs. From the first click to the last, you run it with your own screen reader. Then you record the point where it stops you. Our staff teach you the rest. That means what each WCAG rule is really asking for. It also means how to describe a problem so a developer understands it immediately.

You might wonder why we would hire someone who has never done this. The difficult part of this job was never the standard. It was always knowing how a page should behave when you cannot see it. You have been learning that for years without anyone calling it training. Rule numbers we can teach anybody. The training exists for that. It also leads to a full-time job.

What it looks like day to day. Pay starts from day one. Hours run from 10 to 20 a week. You work on-site in Chicago or remotely from anywhere else in Illinois. Six or seven people join us this time. Finish the training and it becomes a paid full-time role. That can be remote or on-site.

The Work You Will Be Doing

• Do real client tasks with your own screen reader and keyboard.
• Record the step that stopped you and what your screen reader said.
• Learn WCAG 2.1 Level AA from our staff one rule at a time.
• Describe each problem so a developer can see it. We teach you how.
• Test it again after they fix it and say whether the problem is gone or has only moved.

What You Need Before You Start

• You use a screen reader in your own life every day.
• You are willing to be taught. You say so when something is not clear.
• You reply when we write. You come when you said you would.

Things That Help If You Have Them

• You have used a website that you could not use at all. You wanted to fix it.
• You have used a screen reader on a phone as well as a computer.

How the Training Works

Our own staff teach you. They teach on real client websites, not practice pages. You work next to someone who does this job. Together you do a real task. Afterwards you talk about what stopped you and why it matters. Training happens on-site in Chicago. Joining from anywhere else in Illinois means we train you remotely.

Some of this you cannot learn on your own, so we teach it. That means what each WCAG rule is really asking for. It also means how to describe a problem so a developer understands it immediately. You learn to separate a problem that stops a person completely from one that is only annoying. That takes the longest to learn. It is also the one clients pay for.

We are hiring six or seven people this time, so you get real attention from the team. The training is paid at 10 to 20 hours a week. Finish it and the role becomes full-time. That can be remote or on-site. If you want to know anything else, email hello@wcagrules.com and ask.

Why We Train Rather Than Recruit

Too much of this industry has never employed the people it serves. Sighted consultants run a scanner and then report on an experience they have never had. We think that is wrong. Hiring you is how we change that. You learn the standard. It reads differently when you are the person it was written for. One day a client will rewrite a checkout because you told them where it stopped you. That is the part that makes this work worth doing.
